10 of Your Questions About Our Custom Carpentry— Answered

More homeowners are thinking about renovating interior spaces than ever. According to the 2023 Houzz & Home Study on U.S. renovation trends, at 72%, interior spaces are the most popular areas to renovate, and homeowners tackle an average of nearly three interior projects at a time— with kitchens and bathrooms remaining the top projects. This same report found that more people are turning to professionals for these projects, with 46% hiring custom service professionals and 44% hiring construction professionals in 2022.

With more people turning to custom carpentry companies like Raleigh Woodworks, we’ve also started to get more questions about how we do our projects. To help with that, we wanted to share some of the answers to our frequently asked questions.

Read on to get some of your questions about custom carpentry answered— so you can be ready for your 2024 renovation projects!

1. What Types of Services Do You Offer?

At Raleigh Woodworks, we specialize in custom interior trim carpentry and cabinetry, which includes crown molding, baseboards, wainscoting, coffered ceilings, interior doors, and custom built-ins. We work with you and your vision for your space to ensure the custom carpentry we do on your home fits your style and budget.

Because we focus on interior carpentry, we do not offer any exterior doors, decks, or structural carpentry services. We’ve created custom carpentry for living rooms, kitchens, home offices, and all sorts of interior spaces.

2. Do You Do Commercial Projects?

Yes, we do! We have two decades of experience in the commercial industry and use that to create custom cabinetry, interior doors, and trim for commercial businesses throughout North Carolina.

Some examples of our commercial work include accent walls for Odika Furniture and the NCCU Men’s Basketball Locker Room. You can learn more about our commercial projects here

3. Do You Provide Materials For Projects?

Yes, we do! Unless otherwise specified, we typically provide all necessary wood-related materials for your custom build, including high-quality wood, molding, trim, and paint. If you have a specific request or material in mind, please let us know— we’re always happy to work with you on a solution!

In terms of cabinets and built-ins, Raleigh Woodworks supplies soft-close hinges, drawer slides, and special fasteners for our customers. However, we understand that selecting knobs and pulls is a personal choice. Therefore, we recommend customers choose their knobs and pulls to match their existing aesthetic or find the perfect style from the wide range of options available in the market. We offer various hardware options for interior doors and can include them with your order if requested.

Whatever your vision is for your project, we can work with you to get suitable materials for the custom carpentry project.

4. Can I Choose My Own Paint or Stain Colors?

Yes, we offer a range of custom stain and paint options to match your existing decor or create a new aesthetic for your space. Specifically, we use Sherwin Williams paint products and Minwax stains to offer a wide range of paint and stain colors. If you have something else in mind, you can provide your own custom color for a truly unique look.

From the materials to the design, paint to stain— we’re dedicated to ensuring that the final design has the right look for your space.

5. How Long Does a Project Typically Take?

Project timelines may vary based on project size and complexity. It also depends on the materials and time needed to complete the design. When we talk through the quote and the preparation process, we will talk you through the project's timeline. Throughout the project, we’ll also provide updates on the status so you’re never left in the dark.

Built-ins and cabinetry typically require 1-2 weeks for shop time and 3-4 days for installation. We construct all cabinets in our shop to expedite the process, minimizing the time required within your home. Custom trim carpentry, such as an accent wall or single-room wainscoting, can be installed within a day or two.

6. Do You Provide Full Project Management For Larger Projects Involving Multiple Trades?

Raleigh Woodworks specializes in carpentry services, including custom cabinetry, built-ins, interior doors, and trim carpentry. While we do project manage projects consisting of our carpentry work, we recommend starting with a general contractor for larger projects that require the coordination of multiple trades. That contractor can oversee and manage all aspects of the project.

While we excel in carpentry, we do not provide general contracting services. If you need help finding other professionals, we have a network of trusted professionals in various trades, such as electrical, plumbing, general contracting, tile installation, whole-room painting, and more. We would happily provide excellent referrals from our trusted network if you require assistance beyond carpentry.

7. Do You Offer Warranties on Your Work?

Yes, we do! We offer a one-year warranty on all of our workmanship. If you have any issues with our work during this time, we will return to fix it at no extra cost.

As covered on our warranty page, our dedicated team is committed to resolving your concerns swiftly and efficiently, ensuring that your experience with our products continues to be exceptional.

8. Can You Help Us With Design Decisions?

Yes, we can! In addition to collaborating with you on determining the design you’re looking for, we also do rendering work. Our Sketchup 3D Renderings, including two rounds of edits, are priced at $150 per drawing. Any additional edits will be billed hourly. Once the drawing is completed, it's yours to keep, regardless of whether you choose us for the project.

However, if you decide to proceed with the project as rendered, you'll receive a full refund on the rendering cost, which will be applied to your final invoice.

9. How Does Payment Work?

In terms of cost, our hourly labor rate for custom carpentry services is $150. The amount of hours for a project can depend on the project's complexity, materials, and design work.

For built-in cabinetry, the average cost is approximately $1,000 per linear foot, based on an 8' height and 2' depth. However, pricing can vary significantly due to several factors. These factors include the material type, hardware selection, and number of shelves, doors, and drawers. The door and drawer front style can also impact the overall price. Additionally, the addition of specialty moldings may increase the pricing.

Our interior doors vary in price based on the design and materials chosen. We provide options to accommodate different budgets and will work together with you to create the ideal door for your requirements. On average, a single custom door costs around $1,500, including handmade building and installation.

Regarding the payment schedule, we require a 50% deposit to begin your project, and the remaining balance is due upon completion. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards.

10. How Do I Get a Quote For a Project?

To receive a quote for your project, you only need to fill out the form on our website, email us, or call us. We'll schedule a Zoom consultation to discuss your project and provide a ballpark estimate.
